Ángel Muñiz-Mejuto

PhD Candidate and University Lecturer

I was born in Vigo, Galicia, where I spent most of my life until I moved to Madrid to begin my graduate studies.

My educational background is quite rich. I hold an undergraduate degree in Economics from Universidade de Vigo (University of Vigo) and two master’s degrees from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M, University Carlos III of Madrid), one in Economics and one in Social Sciences. Currently, I am pursuing my PhD in Economic History, also at UC3M. My research interests include international capital flows, migration flows, regional growth contrasts, and land tenure systems. See more about it here.

I work as a full-time university lecturer in Economics at Universidad Europea de Madrid (UEM, European University of Madrid) and also teach at EAE Business School. Read more about my teaching here. Furthermore, I also collaborate with Spanish media outlets like El País and RTVE, where I discuss current issues in the Spanish economy, such as the labour market and financial markets. See more here.

One of my proudest achievements was publishing a paper at 21 years old. I have also had the opportunity to present my work at numerous international conferences. At 25, I was offered a full-time contract as a university lecturer at UEM, which has been a significant milestone in my career.

My life revolves around water. Outside academia, I am an accomplished swimmer, having participated in Spanish National and Galician championships, earning numerous gold and silver medals. I am part of the squad of Club Natación Madrid Moscardó, competing in long-distance freestyle and the 200m butterfly events. Moreover, I very much enjoy fishing and sailing.

When I am not in the water, I enjoy reading fantasy books, particularly Tolkien‘s work. I believe ‘The Silmarillion’ is my favourite book. I am also a huge Star Wars (excluding Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, those are rubbish) and Game of Thrones fan. A curious fact is that I like etymology. It is a really interesting area of study.

Regarding musical tastes, I love Metal. I started listening to Metal when I was 12 years old and I have not stopped since. My favourite bands cover different areas within the genre, highlighting Arch Enemy, Rammstein, Kamelot or Iron Maiden.

I know it is a cliché, but I really love travelling. Especially, enjoying foreign cuisine. One of my favourite trips was when I went to Russia. Moscow and St. Petersburg seemed like amazing cities to me. I also had the opportunity to visit the Norwegian fjords, which stand among my favourites as well. One of the best parts of working in academia is the fact that you get to travel, whether it is to conferences or stays abroad.

My immediate goal is to complete my PhD and earn my doctorate. I aspire to write something on tourism’s economics, standing out how an economy cannot depend primarily on such a sector. In the long term, I envision myself living in a house with a large land, sailing my boat, writing impactful research, and potentially starting a business.
